SHADOW GRAMMAR

The Studio’s exploration into machine learning resulted in the creation of a software program that could identify and attach ‘values’ to light and darkness, and manifest those values into the length of a rectangle.

This exploration into chiaroscuro, the language of nuances between of light and shade, through the ‘eyes’ of a machine, is at the heart of ‘Shadow Grammar’. From the right vantage point, the varying depths of shadows and tones of grey, abstracted in mild steel, articulate into the intended image. A single colour artwork, that merely through the virtue of shadows, creates an image that is present, yet not.
